Is Online Dating So Saturated That It Is Unprofitable?

Let’s get one thing out of the way. When it comes to making money off the internet, your biggest investment is not money, seriously. That is not your most important commodity. The rarest commodity, when it comes to online entrepreneurialism, is coming up with a new idea that actually works.

This is why ventured capital funds from Silicon Valley and elsewhere routinely invest millions of dollars in new ideas. They focus on ideas that have a good chance of working. That’s what they are focusing on. They’re really investing in concepts. That’s how important or powerful a new idea can be. And nothing highlights this key business reality than the absence of original ideas in the world of online dating.

Make no mistake about it. Online dating can be a huge money-maker. There are lots of online dating sites that generate millions of dollars every single year, no doubt about that. That’s not the issue. The problem is, if you’re going to be the one-millionth guy who’s going to set up his online dating site, you are intentionally setting yourself up to fail. There’s really no way around it, because the odds are not in your favor.

Now, you can be that rare guy who comes in riding a unicorn and ends up bucking all these trends and actually walks away with a lot of money. However, the odds are not in your favor. Instead, you probably will be part of the 99.9% of guys who try their hand at building an online dating site and end up failing miserably. All those thousands of dollars mom and dad loaned you for your online venture? Up in smoke. Your girlfriend’s credit card limit? Up in smoke. Your bank loan? Up in smoke.

I don’t mean to paint a depressing picture, but unless you have a clear idea of what could go wrong, it’s too easy to just roll the dice and hope for the best. You have to have a clear idea of what you’re up against, only then can you have at least a chance of succeeding.

This is why I highly recommend that you write a business plan. Now, a lot of people say to themselves, “Dude, I’m just building a website. Sure, it’s an online adult dating site, but it’s still a website. Why the hell do I need to write a business plan?” If you write that plan you could end up owning sites like that do have a chance of hitting the mark in that niche.
